Animus Animalis (a story about People, Animals and Things)

Aistė Žegulytė, Lithuania, 2018, 69'

A taxidermist, a deer farmer and a museum worker: they all live in an environment in which the line between reality and artificiality, between life and death, has become imperceptible. It’s a world where not only deer and boars but also plastic alligators are being hunted and stuffed animals are competing for the most alive-looking posture and legitimate gaze. The most important exhibits are set up in dioramas with fabricated natural landscapes, sitting between aerosol-free trees and fake snow. Animals – dead and alive – are everywhere and they won’t stop looking at you.
